HEIC is what iPhones save photos in. It is efficient, and almost no desktop software can open it. PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, so it is what screenshots, icons and graphics get saved as. This page moves a HEIC to a PNG in your own browser: the file is read, re-encoded and handed back without being uploaded.

Both formats carry transparency, so a transparent background survives the conversion.

PNG is lossless, so nothing further is thrown away. Where the HEIC was already lossy, that stops the damage rather than repairing it.

#### Do I need to install anything to open a HEIC file?
